Mews House in Mayfair
Mews House in Mayfair
Situated in Mayfair, London, the project overhauls a historic typology of a mews house. Initially intended as an interior update, it evolved into a comprehensive architectural renovation due to dim corridors, cramped staircases, and uninspiring interiors. The objective was to reimagine circulation, refine functionality, and instill a distinct identity. Stripped to its structure, the house retained only its brick walls and steel skeleton, enabling a blend of new and old. Furthermore, the ground floor of the house had to accommodate a portion of the owner's classic car collection.
A tunnel-like entrance marks a seamless transition from street to home, while a semi-spiral staircase fosters connectivity between floors. A sizable skylight floods the central stairwell with zenithal light, offering access to the roof and enabling ventilation. Bedrooms, living spaces, and service areas were reconfigured to enhance flow, views, and spatial openness, rectifying the initial disarray.
Material choices elevate the spatial experience. The garage showcases a bespoke polished asphalt floor. The staircase features mild steel clad in hand-patinated brass panels, providing depth, warmth, and unexpected reflections. Solid oak boards grace upper levels, ensuring continuity and warmth. Bathrooms showcase natural stone slabs - Amazone Green, Grigio di Masso, and Rosso di Masso - each contributing to a distinct ambiance and intimacy.
